History of Keyword Stuffing
As know, Keyword stuffing had been practised in the past to achieve top ranks in search engine result pages (SERPs). Getting online visibility for particular phrases, was the game of keyword stuffing. But now, this method is outdated and figures no value to search engine rankings today. Particularly in Google, it is not appreciated. Even sometimes affect your ranking negatively. These days, this tactic no longer provides better rankings to web pages using this technique.
How was it used before
As per the rule of keyword stuffing, you have to stuff more keywords in a webpage to rank higher in SERPs. Means, the more number of keywords in a webpage, the higher will be your rankings in SERPs. But stuffing more keywords in a webpage negatively affects user experience. That is why webmasters started practising this strategy in a hidden way. To hide keyword stuffing from users, webmasters started opting for techniques stated below:
- Text colouring to blend keywords with the background
- CSS “Z” positioning to place the bunch keywords behind an image
- CSS absolute positioning to have the keywords positioned far away from the page centre
- “Noscript” tag used to place hidden text within a web page.
All these techniques were common techniques, to save user experience and to get higher rankings. These keywords were hidden from users but were easily detectable by search engine bots. That is why webmasters used such techniques to rank their article higher for particular keyphrases.
Sometimes, some Naughty Minded Webmasters insert keywords that are regularly searched (such as “sex”), even if those terms do not bear any connection to the content of a webpage. They used to do so, in order to bring traffic to their web pages.
